January 25- Visas are FINALLY here!!

We are one step closer to Elizabeth!! Our Visas FINALLY arrived today from our travel agency.

Apparently there are some new rules in place for obtaining a Chinese Visa and they must be hand delivered to one of the Chinese Consulates. Our travel agency is in San Francisco where one of the Consulates is located so we mailed the visas to our travel agency and they delivered our visa applications (and passports- yes, it is required that you mail your actual passport!!!!) for us.

We mailed them (using the overnight service) on Saturday, January 13th. Several of the families we will be traveling with have already received their Visas back and we were starting to get a little nervous. But, praise the Lord, they came today!!!

January 23- A Very Proud Big Brother...

There is a certain soon-to-be big brother who apparently is very excited about his little sister's upcoming arrival!!!! How excited? Well, he bought this sweet little dress for her this past weekend!! ALL BY HIMSELF!!!

Now, I know he IS 19, but buying a little girl's dress is not something he does on a regular basis (I'm pretty sure he's NEVER done it before!!). He said he was looking for just the right dress for Elizabeth and he found it!! It's full of ladybugs and anyone associated with Chinese adoptions will be quite familiar with ladybugs- a symbol of "good luck" with the soon-to-be families.

So, what do y'all think? Will this big brother be spoiling his little sister or what?

Comments

wow what great taste!!! I dont think she will be spoiled TOO much by her big bro!! NOT LOL

January 22- the wait continues...

When we received our referral news on January 4, we were told there was a slight chance that we would be able to travel to get Elizabeth in 4 weeks. Well, that slim chance is now gone and it looks like we will be traveling around February 22. While February 22 is still only a few weeks away, it seems like years to us right now.

So, please pray for us. We are tired of waiting. We just want Elizabeth home with her family. And pray for Elizabeth, too. Pray that the Lord would keep her healthy and safe until we are there with her. He can be a Father to her better than we can ever imagine.

Comments

I'm so sorry that your wait seems to go on and on! I know the feeling. :o( The waiting is so much worse when you have a picture of the face you've been dreaming about for so long. I'll be praying for you and Elizabeth.
Posted by: Melissa Ward on January 22, 2007 at 05:37 P.M.

I am so excited for *all* of you. Just remember: every minute that goes by takes you closer and closer to being with precious Elizabeth - who I want to meet, by the way!!! :-D You will just have to all come here for a visit.

January 18- Waiting on Elizabeth

This is the article that our newspaper, The McDuffie Mirror, wrote about Elizabeth. You can see it online, too, at www.mcduffiemirror.com.
Waiting on Elizabeth: Dearing couple plans two-week trip to China to finalize adoption of baby girl in February
Lynn Davidson
Staff Writer
After eight years of waiting, a Dearing couple will travel to the other side of the earth to bring home the baby they've been praying for. On Jan. 4, Todd and Shari Upchurch received the official word from the Chinese Children Adoption International Agency that they have a baby daughter.
"I've waited so long. We've been trying all this time to have one of our own, and the Lord didn't choose to give us children," Mrs. Upchurch said. "Now, I am so excited to finally see her sweet little face."
The couple will travel to China in approximately four weeks to pick up their daughter, whom they've named Elizabeth, and stay two weeks to finalize the adoption.
Mr. Upchurch said he and his wife have been talking about adopting since before they were married in 1998. He said he has always felt a burden for orphan girls in China because of the country's "one-child policy" that reportedly cause many people to keep baby boys because they can grow up to work and help support the family. Mr. Upchurch said he has a special place in his heart for abandoned children also because he was abandoned as a child by his biological father and later adopted by his stepfather.
Mrs. Upchurch said she first became aware of international adoptions when she was young and saw the story of an Olympic athlete-orphan from Romania featured on television. She said at that time, she thought she would never have children on her own, but "I wanted to adopt 12." When she married, Mrs. Upchurch adopted her husband's two children from a previous marriage - Josh, who is now 19, and Danielle, now 20.
While most Americans were filing their taxes last April 15, Mr. and Mrs. Upchurch were sending in their application to the adoption agency. What followed was "mountains and mountains of paperwork," two home studies and finger printings.
"But it is so worth it, because we get our baby Elizabeth," Mrs. Upchurch said. "There is nothing secret about you after you've gone through the adoption process. And now it's the fun part."
The Upchurch's are enjoying every moment of "the fun part." They proudly share their news through an online journal of photos, feelings and facts as the events unfold. Mrs. Upchurch said she was pleasantly surprised when Josh produced a short video about his new little sister.
The spare bedroom in their house has already been changed to a nursery, complete with pink curtains, ribbons, and bows. Members of Cavalry Baptist Church, where Mr. Upchurch is pastor, have planned a baby shower, and many friends have donated infant clothes and toys.
Through their journey, the Upchurch's have befriended other families in the Central Savannah River Area who have adopted, or are adopting, international children. Mrs. Upchurch said they will have dinner with several of these families Saturday in Augusta, and she can't wait to "show off pictures" of Elizabeth.
Although everyone they know shares their excitement, Mrs. Upchurch said they have had a few questions as to why they chose international adoption. Her favorite question was if Elizabeth would speak English.
"Does any eight-month old baby speak English?" she said with a laugh.
After successfully home schooling both Danielle and Josh, the Upchurch's said they plan to home school Elizabeth also. Although they plan to teach her native culture, the couple said they are not going to focus on it.
"I'm not anti-China, but I'm not raising her as a Chinese daughter. I'm raising an American daughter," Mr. Upchurch said.
His wife has the same opinion, but from a different point of view.
"She's from the Guangdong Province, which is in south China, so she's still a Southern girl," she said with a laugh. "So she will be perfectly fine with grits and 'y'all.'"

Shari,I just realized I posted this on an "old" date - didn't know if you would read past entries so here it is again... I found you on the RQ site - have read your other blog (and loved it!!) for months. Elizabeth is beautiful! And, I just figured out that you are near Augusta - my hometown! My husband and I live in Texas now but would one day love to return to the Deep South as all my family is there. Small, small world. Maybe we can one day meet. We have been logged in 8 months now - still have a long way to go - Blessings, Lynn

Hi Lynn!!!Definitely be sure and let me know when y'all are back in the area visiting family!! I would love to meet you!!!I know y'all do have a ways to go before a referral and the waiting is HORRIBLE!!! But, we were in the middle of getting "the call" from our agency and Todd looked at me and said something to the effect of "it sure doesn't seem like we waited very long, does it?" HA!! At that moment in time, 15 1/2 months of waiting was nothing but a snap. Quick. Over. What a relief!! I'm POSITIVE you will say the exact same thing!!It's soo good to "meet" you! His,Shari

January 13- A package for Elizabeth

Many orphanages in China will allow you to send a care package to your child. Elizabeth's orphanage happens to be one of them. On Thursday, we mailed her a package with a blanket, a teddy bear, a picture album and a disposable camera. We could only send a package the size of a shoe box so it was kind of hard to squish everything in there!!
Todd and I had been sleeping with the teddy bear for a while and Joshua, Todd and I all slept with her blanket. Why? We want her to hopefully be a little familiar with our scent. Not only will we look different to her (I mean, we won't have dark hair or dark eyes- how strange to her!!), but we will smell different, too. Hopefully the blanket and the teddy bear will have some of our scent on them.
The disposable camera is for the orphanage workers to take pictures of Elizabeth as well as pictures of the orphanage. I would love for us to have more of a glimpse into her world in the orphanage, the only place she's known as "home" so far in her life.
Also included is a photo album. It's plastic so children can chew on it if they want to and very colorful to catch the eye of little ones. We included pictures of all three of us so hopefully one of the workers in the orphanage can show her the pictures of us and explain to her who we are.
I do not know whether or not she will see these things nor do I know if we will receive them back. Please pray that these things get to her and that we get them back- especially the camera. The blanket and teddy bear I would love to get back, but I also know that these could also bring another child comfort.

I was just able to get to your site, and I am just thrilled for you all! She is absolutely beautiful. I believe she is one of the luckiest children ever to be the one God has entrusted to you. I know she will be raised to be a woman of faith and an honor to your family and the Lord. We just can't wait to meet her and let her play with our girls. God bless you all! Much love, Lisa

Todd, Sherry, Joshua, we just got to browse your journal and like Lisa said I am so happy for you guys! It looks like things are coming together for this adoption which you all have planned, prayed, and hoped for. Your family deserves a victory and I am praying for this vicotry to come SOON! Elizabeth is so terribly blessed to have such a family! Looking forward to meeting her in person ~ Eric Hoffman

Did you use a company to send your care package, or were you able to do it on your own. I am planning to send a package if possible when we get our referral, so I'd love to know more! I hope the items you sent help ease the transition for your little one!

January 11- More pictures of Elizabeth!!!

We have received three more pictures of Elizabeth! Praise the Lord!!

The first photo was taken 11-13-2006 by a lady who visited the orphanage with her family. The orphanage allowed her to take a picture of every baby!! She graciously posted all of her pictures from that trip on an email group that we are on. We knew Elizabeth's sweet face as soon as we saw it.

The next two pictures were taken 1-10-2007. Yes, you read the date right. As of my writing this journal, these two pictures of our Elizabeth were taken YESTERDAY!!! In the second picture Elizabeth is with Miss Yu, the orphanage director. The third photo is our dearest, loveliest Elizabeth.

January 10- Elizabeth is going to be in the newspaper!!!

We were honored today to be interviewed by our county's newspaper, The McDuffie Mirror. Staff reporter Lynn Davidson came over at 3:30 and asked us questions about Elizabeth- the adoption process, what we're doing to get ready for her, etc. When the article is printed, I will share it here.
Elizabeth Ann isn't even here yet and she is already famous!!!

January 5- The bearer of good news!!!!

Yes, that is a Fed Ex truck that I took a picture of!! And that is NOT our regular Fed Ex delivery man. But who cares?? He brought us FABULOUS news today!!! More information about Elizabeth Ann Upchurch!!!!

When he came up to the house with the package, I grabbed my camera and ran to the door. Thankfully Todd was here. We weren't expecting to see Fed Ex until this afternoon! He pleasantly surprised us at 11:40 am.

I opened the door and smiled really big and said "Is that from CCAI?" He said "yes". By then, Todd was at the front door and told him about the adoption and that he was bringing us fabulous news about our new daughter!! He was a very kind man and happily agreed to us asking to take his picture. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of sharing that story with friends and family today.

The package included two more pictures of her sweet face and more health information. Also included is a form we need to sign to say that we officially accept Elizabeth. Why would anyone NOT accept that perfect little face? God planned for her to be Elizabeth Upchurch! He is so good!
